Drill bit coating color can help buyers identify a product family, but color alone is not a guarantee of performance. Gold, black, bronze or purple-gray finishes may refer to different coatings, heat treatment or even decorative surface treatment. This guide explains what to verify before ordering.
Common coating colors

Why color can mislead buyers
Two drill bits with the same color can have different base material, heat treatment, grinding accuracy and coating thickness. A cheap decorative color is not the same as a controlled PVD coating.
Match coating to material
Bright or polished finishes are often useful for aluminum because chip adhesion is the main concern. Black oxide is common for general-purpose HSS drills. TiN can improve wear resistance. TiAlN or AlTiN may help in higher heat applications but should be matched with proper cutting conditions.
Questions to ask the supplier
- What is the base material: HSS, M35, M42 or carbide?
- Is the color a real PVD coating, oxide treatment or decorative finish?
- What workpiece material is it designed for?
- Can you provide sample testing or inspection photos?
- What speed/feed and coolant condition is recommended?
Coating is not a substitute for geometry
If the point angle, flute polish, web thickness or runout is wrong, coating will not solve poor hole quality. For difficult jobs, confirm geometry and base material before paying extra for color.
