When a drill bit fails, users often blame the bit immediately. Sometimes the bit quality is the problem. But many failures come from speed, feed, heat, chip evacuation or a mismatch between the bit and the material.

1. Too Much Speed

High speed creates heat. Heat softens the cutting edge, especially on standard HSS bits. Stainless steel, hardened steel and thick plate need lower RPM than wood or aluminum. If the bit turns blue, the cutting edge has been overheated.

2. Too Little Feed

This surprises many beginners: too little pressure can also damage a bit. If the bit rubs instead of cutting, it generates heat and work-hardens the surface. Stainless steel is especially unforgiving. Use firm, controlled feed so the bit makes chips, not dust.

3. Wrong Bit Material

HSS is good for mild steel and general use. Cobalt is better for stainless steel and harder metals. Carbide is excellent for rigid CNC or abrasive materials, but brittle in handheld drilling. Buying “the hardest bit” is not always the correct answer.

4. Poor Workholding

If the workpiece moves, the drill bit sees side load. That is one of the fastest ways to snap small bits or chip carbide. Clamp the workpiece and keep the drill aligned with the hole axis.

5. No Coolant or Lubrication

Cutting fluid reduces heat and friction in metal drilling. For aluminum, lubrication also helps prevent chip welding. For stainless steel, coolant and low speed can make the difference between a clean hole and a burned bit.

6. Chips Not Evacuating

Deep holes trap chips. Trapped chips create friction, heat and breakage. Peck drilling — drilling a little, withdrawing to clear chips, then continuing — is a simple way to improve tool life.
