When cold saw blade teeth chip, many buyers immediately blame carbide grade. Sometimes material grade matters, but the most common root causes are impact, vibration, wrong pitch, runout, chip packing or coolant failure. This guide helps separate blade quality problems from process problems before the next order.

Impact is the first suspect

Cold saw teeth are designed for controlled cutting, not hammering. Thin-wall tube, bundled tube and interrupted profiles can shock the tooth if feed or pitch is wrong.

Runout and flange problems

If the blade does not rotate flat, a few teeth carry more load than the others. Before changing blade supplier, measure spindle runout, flange cleanliness, bore fit and whether the blade sits fully against the flange.

Wrong tooth count

Too few teeth engaged can grab the workpiece. Too many teeth can overfill gullets. Both conditions increase chipping risk. Tooth count should be selected by wall thickness, section shape, material and cutting method.

Coolant and chip evacuation

Chips trapped in the cut become hard particles between the tooth and workpiece. Good coolant is not only cooling; it carries chips away. Check nozzle position, flow and filtration.

When it is truly a blade specification issue

If clamping, feed, runout and coolant are stable but the same failure repeats, the blade may need a tougher carbide/cermet grade, different tooth geometry, coating or body thickness.

  • Photos of damaged teeth from both sides.
  • Workpiece material and dimensions.
  • Machine model, RPM, feed and coolant condition.
  • Whether failure happened at start, middle or end of cut.
  • Number of cuts before first chipping appeared.
